Welcome!

Welcome to Shirat Sara’s home page! Our group meets on Shabbat mornings at 8:30 a.m. approximately every six weeks in the beit midrash of the Pardes Institute, 29 Pierre Koenig Street, Jerusalem. We began as a small group in 1994, and are pleased to see new people joining us each time we meet. The group includes adults, teenagers, and young girls eagerly awaiting their turn to lead An’im Zemirot. We consult with Rav Arie Strikovsky on halakhic questions.

Our service differs somewhat from a standard service because Shirat Sara does not define itself as a minyan. For example, we do not say kaddish, kedushah, barekhu, or birkot ha-Torah, and there is no repetition of the Amidah. The Torah reading is part of a larger program of learning that includes divrei Torah and a devar halakhah.

A note about tallitot: Rav Yehuda Herzl Henkin recommends that a tallit worn by a woman should appear distinct from the current style of men’s tallitot.

The group was named Shirat Sara in memory of Sara Rachel Duker of blessed memory, a strong yet modest young woman who led and enriched our tefillot with her sweet voice, and whom we lost in the terrorist bombing of February 1996.
